postheadericon Linville – Stay Cool and See the Mountains from the Inside or Take a Hike to see The Most Photographed Waterfall in NC

North Carolina is full of wonderful things to see.  The scenic drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway will show you beauty and grace.  It is filled with small mountain towns, scenic overlooks, and recreational opportunities!

If you get the opportunity~make a stop at Linville Caverns and then take a hike to see the huge, majestic Linville Falls.

Linville Caverns lie deep inside the Humpback Mountain and are the only caverns in NC.  They offer a guided 35-40 minute tour of the inside of the cavern telling you about the history and showing you the work of nature!

The Caverns stay a cool 52 degrees year round – it’s a great break from the heat in the hot summer!  We enjoyed looking at all of the different stalactite and stalagmite formations, seeing the trout in the underground stream, looking at the “Bottomless Pool” through the metal grate, seeing hibernating bats, and most of all, experiencing TOTAL darkness!!  It’s an experience that is freaky and cool at the same time.  You can’t see anything!

Here are a few photos of the different formations…..

Stalactites and Stalagmites occur in limestone caves.  A stalactite is above and hangs down and a stalagmite is below and sticks up.  They grow in pairs.

Tips: Dress appropriately.  It is only 54 degrees so bring a jacket or sweatshirt.  A waterproof jacket will keep you dry.  Sneakers are best.

Human hands can stop the rock growth so no touching!!

There are some narrow paths and you will experience total darkness so if you suffer from claustrophobia you should be mindful of this.
