Flintlock Campground

Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains and only minutes away from downtown Boone, North Carolina, Flintlock Campground has all of the camping amenities for a wonderful family stay.  Whether you’re looking for tent camping near Boone, NC or plan on taking your RV, this place can accommodate you.  A refreshing mountainside stream runs through the park and we had a wonderfully relaxing weekend sitting by the stream listening to the rushing water!  The kids enjoyed getting in and wading in it and every so often a mischievous chipmunk would pop out seeing what we were up to!  The park also has a volleyball net and playground!

Cell Service:  Great

Public Rest Rooms:  Clean

The Good:  Everything was perfect.  We had a hard time pulling ourselves away from this campground to explore all of the fun things to do in the area including Grandfather Mountain, Tweetsie Railroad, Linville Caverns, Blowing Rock, and Boone.  We ventured a little farther away and rode the Virginia Creeper Trail, too!

The Bad:  Nothing.  This campground made our list of places to return to next year.

Things to Do near Flintlock Campground

Flintlock in only minutes from all of the action in Boone, NC.  It has gem mining within walking distance and is just a short drive to many mountain attractions including Grandfather Mountain, Tweetsie Railroad, Linville Caverns, and Blowing Rock.  If you’d like to take a day trip I’d suggest riding the Virginia Creeper Trial in Virginia!

Campfire Lodgings

Campfire Lodgings Mountaintop Camping – Asheville, NC

Located just minutes from downtown Asheville, NC, Campfire Lodgings was a perfect place for our first trip in the new travel trailer!  It offers paved back-in sites with full hookups and each site has a grill and picnic table.  The premium sites have a million dollar view (pictured above) and the other sites are just a short walk from the open common area so everyone can enjoy it.

Snow Tubing

One of the greatest things about living in central North Carolina is the close proximity to the mountains and the beach!  Within just a few hours you can be soaking up the rays or speeding down the slopes.

Here are 8 different ski/tubing resorts within just hours of Charlotte, NC.  Most operate from late November through mid-March and openings largely depend of the weather conditions so check each website for accurate operating days and times.

*I have not visited these attractions (except Jonas Ridge) and they’re in no particular order*

Fun Fall Activities @ Aw Shucks Farm Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch

Last weekend we had the opportunity to visit a super fun pumpkin patch and corn maze called Aw Shucks Farm!  It’s a family owned farm with activities such as a corn maze, playground, paddle boat rides, target shooting, pumpkin picking, and a tractor drawn hay ride on the Hill Mobility!  The old time vintage feel of the farm made it a truly unique place.

postheadericon The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad ~ North Carolina

As part of our relaxing mountain getaway we decided to take a ride on the The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad.  We were looking for that slow, laid back atmosphere where we could sit back and enjoy the scenery through the wintry mountains, have a nice lunch in Dillsboro (the layover town), and then get back on the train and have a nice relaxing ride back to Bryson City.  The GSMR gave us just that on that perfectly sunny Saturday morning!
